Instinct

I've had a nagging question since I got this cast. If I'm about to fall in a non life-threatening manner, will I instinctively put my bad foot down or take one for the team.

Today I answered that question.

Before we get to my acrobatic moment, lets discuss the fact that I'm getting really awesome at balancing on one foot. Today I took a one-footed shower. You think that's easy? You try it. It's slippery in there and I have a lot of hair I have to shampoo and rinse! It's hard. Anyway, moral is, I'm awesome. That said, I did tempt fate earlier.

While trying to select the perfect towels for said shower from the bag of clean laundry on the floor of our bedroom I nearly bit it. I put one crutch aside while holding the other to steady myself as I bent down to rifle through the bag. It turned out that as I was bending down my left hand was holding the crutch a bit parallel to the ground. This is not helpful in bearing weight. Luckily, I have developed cat-like reflexes and managed not to fall. This time, anyway.

Jason did an excellent job finding us an apartment with as few stairs as possible. There are four. They are a bit too narrow for my entire foot to fit on each one, and thus they are my arch-nemesis. I hobble up and down the stairs pretty masterfully, if I do say so myself, so when I lost my balance coming down the stairs today I was pretty surprised. I was already down a step or two. My first reaction was to put my foot down, of course. Luckily, it was a slow-motion fall, so I had time for my brain to realize I wasn't falling forward (aka non life-threatening) and to override my... well my brain. I picked my foot up and fell/sat back, ending up lying on the landing looking up at the hall light. I felt like an overturned turtle.

Four days til the cast comes off! Those days can't go by quickly enough.
